why is destroying american money a federal offense?

Question by Alexi The One Of Metal: why is destroying american money a federal offense?
So if I took my one dollar bill and ripped it in half in front of a police officer they could charge me for breaking the law?

Thats about the most stupid thing I’ve ever heard haha. It’s only a piece of special paper in the end so why is it such a big crime to purposely dismember money?

Out of all the federal offenses I find this one the most dumb and pointless unless someone can convince me otherwise?

Best answer:

Answer by Michael RI don’t think that a cop would arrest you, but the reason that it is illegal is b/c the government does not just print notes and issue them. The dollar is backed by gold. In other words, every dollar that is printed for is accounted for against the gold standard. If the government printed money without accounting for it, it would just be a worthless piece of paper.

Save Money Shopping Salvage Grocers

Save Money Shopping Salvage Grocers

More and more people are finding “salvage” grocery stores a way to save big on grocery staples.  As a big fan of my local store in NC, I can tell you that the savings can be huge.

While they do not look like typical grocery stores, neither do their prices.  While it may not be the place to go to pick up specific items on your shopping list, it can be a fabulous treasure hunt for items you use every day.

I like to stop in my local store at least once a week to see what they have.  Some of my best finds have been, Barilla plus pasta for .50 a box, canned beets, peas, corn, string beans and diced tomatoes for .25 a can, IAMS 4lb bags of dog food for a bag, .5 liter bottles of Perrier for .25 each, Kelloggs Smart Start cereal for a box, Ken’s salad dressings for .25 a bottle, 10lb red potatoes for .

The packaging is most often a little dented or crinkled but the . . . → Read More: Save Money Shopping Salvage Grocers

History of Counterfeit Money

History of Counterfeit Money

Counterfeit money actually has a very long history, which means the concept is not really all that new. Currency has been around for a long time and with currency comes greed. They say that money is the root of all evil and counterfeiting is definitely not an exception. It involves creating artificial money for financial gain and deceives others in making them believe that it is real. It contributes to inflation that hurts the pocket books of people all over the world, it damages economies, and it hurts the reputations of the central banks of countries that are innocent because they are not the ones creating the fake cash. That is why governments impose harsh penalties against those caught making fake money.

But exactly how long has counterfeiting money been around? Well, it is true to say that it has been around about as long as money has been around. But how long has legitimate money been around? Well, it has been around approximately 2,700 years. Before that, our ancestors were trading sheep and cattle to get what they . . . → Read More: History of Counterfeit Money

How can the United States be the richest country in the world yet at the same time?

Question by orchidmg: How can the United States be the richest country in the world yet at the same time?
be trillions of dollars in debt? Forgive my lack of knowledge in this area. I just don’t understand how we can give billions and billions of dollars to other countries every year in aide and other things and we be trillions of dollars in debt (meaning they owe us, right?) and still claim to the richest country. Are we then not spending money that we don’t have? The money we produce here, what backs that up? It is gold and where does it come from? Or is all this money just figures on paper?

I’d appreciate it of any of you can explain this to me.
