One of the most well-liked silver us coins to gather are silver eagle coins, here’s a bit of their history.

The “Gold Standard” was the basis of economies over the world for many years, meaning that the price of gold set the value of international currency. Afterwards, the “Silver Standard” came to bepreferred by the Europeans as they began to favor silver over gold. Gold and silver were equally used for a time to calculate the worth of currency for different countries.

America also adopted to the dual metal standard, and by 1873 was using the peso or “pieces of eight” (also recognized as Spanish real) to set its silver standard. The gold standard was determined by the gold coin known as the “Eagle” which was in high demand in Europe following the First World War. The American Civil War started the free banking crisis of the late 1800s that ended America’s use for the silver standard. By the mid-20th century, silver coins were no longer issued as people wanted a paper currency backed with gold reserves following the economic chaos of World War I and the Great Depression.

But, the dismal economy of the 1930s induced Congress to change to the silver standard from the gold standard in 1933. The Federal Reserve allowed the U.S. Treasury to circulate silver certificates that could be traded for silver bullion and silver dollars until 1968. By the 1970s, the Defense National Stockpile accumulated an more than silver that resulted in Congress conceding authorization to liquidate it by the 1980s. This led to silver coins, for instance the American Silver Eagle, being struck in 1986, decades after the final silver coins had been made.

From 1986 to 1992, they were struck in San Francisco and had the “S” mintmark. Minting was transfered to Philadelphia in 1993 where it remained until 2000. These coins were marked using a “P”. Production transfered to West Point in 2001, where it remains to the present day. Coins struck at West Point bear a “W”.

Due to current financial difficulties, the 2010 Proof Silver Eagle Coins has become record setting silver bullion coins regarding sales. In spite of a difficult start in January 2010, a projected coin scarcity enforced production a sales of the proof to last until November, 19, 2010. There is a 100 coin threshold per household set by the United State Mint, and the coins are priced at a remarkable .95 each.

I want to create a FREE website where you collect coins, or creds, for doing things like being active.

Do you know a way for FREE?

Please dont get all technical on this.
Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by VB.Net LoverWe have to get technical on this… it’s not a simple subject and if you think it is you are in to deep. You basically need a database and dynamic technology, like PHP with SQL or something like that.

The database would keep track of the users, their coins, etc.. PHP would access the database. I would start on a smaller project if I were you.

Question by : Did you know that the US is not supposed to have “In God We Trust” on its money or as its motto?
It’s true! The First Amendment and the Treaty of Tripoli specifically state it:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” -US Constitution

“The Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.” -Treaty of Tripoli, 1796

In fact, this motto was not made official until 1956 and was not on paper money until 1957.
@Fustat: You realize that the ones that committed genocide were Europeans, don’t you?

Best answer:

Answer by Dean Wolfmanthey should at least change it to “In America we trust”

The world coins are too new to be collectibles and have extra value. The 1981 10 peso is no longer legal tender. The 1950A $ 5 note sells for around $ 10 in grade fine. The series 1935H $ 1 silver certificate sells for $ 3 in grade very fine. The dates on cotes are not the date it was printed but the date authorized and a letter after the date means that there was a signature change. The 1935H notes were printed up to the early 1950′s. Sorry but the coins you have are not rare or scarce and are worth little as collectibles.

Answer by Scott StevensonThe actual note is quite rare–rare enough that none of my price guides has a value for it, but it has been extensively copied. You could take it to a coin dealer for authentication, but I’m 99.99999% sure that what he has is a copy, which might be worth a couple of dollars

Question by ourgreenacre1: In 1803 era, what would have the equivalent of have been in todays money?
Doing a research paper on Lewis and Clark. Lewis paid $ 20 for his dog which was a lot of money for that time. How could I determine how much that $ 20 would be worth in todays money? Or does anyone know where to reference what the price of other items would have been in the 1803 time era?
I’m trying to get a perspective of how different the prices/value of money were back then as opposed to now. Thanks. History buffs? Any opinions?

Best answer:

Answer by Coconuts$ 516.40

In that ERA, 1 dollar was $ 25.82

$ 25.82 x 20 = $ 516.40
