Question by lava: Would it be better to use gold coins instead of “paper money”?
Or perhaps, what advantage has the use of gold coin currency over paper money? Won’t it be better that the value be “right there” instead of “over there” (Kentucky Gold Reserve)?
Thor: you’re right, it seems not to be practical at all… But I still don’t understand!!! I get paid with direct deposit (electronically), I pay online (electronically)… It seems that currency is turning a matter of “digital information”. It’s confusing Thor…

Answer by Net AdvisorWould you rather log around 30 lbs+ of gold in your pocket or carry a few large bills or just a debt card?
Gold has no advantage when you have no one backing it. US Currency is back ed by the full faith and taxing authority of the US Gov.
Nixon took us off the gold standard, a move that has allowed us to create more debt.

Question by 12345: Do banks check your rolled up coins?
I am from Canada. If I roll up some coins and give them to the bank to exchange for paper money, do they check the coins?
If they check them, what method do they use? Do they weight it or do they break them up and check them one by one? I want to know if I can slip in some American coins in the rolls, because US money are not worth as much as Canadian money, so I wonder if I can make a few bucks using this method. I have a lot of US coins from traveling to the US.
Best answer:
Answer by Non-RedneckI believe they do check them. Most use weight, though I have seen some banks use counting machines.

Collecting World Coins
Apart from the need to engage in trading coins and working eagerly to obtain rare coins, some people have a natural desire for collecting world coins. Often this interest is sparked when one encounters foreign currency; these coin collectors begin to look at the currency in terms of its aesthetics, culture or history rather than simply its monetary value. Veteran coin collectors say that examining and collecting coins from another part of the planet, is just like trying to learn a new language. Collecting world coins is an enjoyable experience, as you’ll also learn the right pronunciation of the denominations, kings or queens, mint names and the like of each foreign penny. Usually archaeologists find coins after excavations and draw many inferences about the people living in those civilizations based on them. We can use coins found in different countries in the world to place ourselves in those cultures or immerse ourselves in their traditions, all through their representation in its most basic form of coins. The hobby of collecting global coins will surely allow you to know more . . . → Read More: Collecting World Coins

Question by purpleclock: are american coins worth more than the paper money itself?
Are dimes, pennies, quarters, nickles, dollar coins worth more than the paper money itself?
Best answer:
Answer by liberty 911According the the fiscal year 2008 US Mint report on US coins:
cent cost 1.38 cents to make
5 cent cost 8.83 cents to make
dime cost 4.36 cents to make
dollar coin 29.6 cents to make
The finished coins are only worth face value. In 2007 the US Mint lost over $ 100 million making the cent and 5 cent coins. Is that what you wanted to know?

Question by KA: Need info on Silver Certificates and Silver Coins from late 1880 and early 1935?
Does anybody out there have any info on silver certificates and silver coins from late 1800′s and early 1900′s. I have a silver certificate($ 1.00) from 1935, trying to find out if it is worth anything today and also have a silver dollar from 1880. How do I go about finding out if they are worth anything?? The silver certificate is in pretty good condition
and silver dollar is also in good shape. I am being told that I need to have them graded and certified to find out the worth of them. Don’t know where to go and how to do that.
Does anybody know about these things and from what I have explained are they worth anything($ $ $ $ ). Would appreciate some feedback from the yahoo community of people who may have some important answers for me. Thanks
